                                                                                     Daydream

                                                                        By Mingming Liang

                                                                        Transleted by Cythia

When I was a child, in my imagination, plants were always associated with ghosts and spirits. I always wondered if they would appear among the banana trees near the playground of our school. It was not important whether they looked pretty or horrifying. What was important was that their presence would satisfy my curiosity. But they had never appeared except in my daydream. They were not willing to come out when I was clearheaded.

As I grew older, the illusion of ghosts and spirits became faded, but the various shapes, rich color and scent of the plants still fascinated me. Floating between light and shadow, those rampant leaves, blooming flowers and sprouting buds diffused the fragrance of nature, conveying mysteries of the process of life.

Thus, plants appeared in my paintings again and again.

One day, everything changed.

In an early summer morning, the breezy wind was flapping the curtain; the weathered leaves of cycad tree were dancing in the golden sunshine, as if the wings of life were fluttering. At the moment, I suddenly sensed the pulses of a living creature through the veins of the leaves. Although the flowers and leaves had dried and weathered, they struck my heart with pure vitality, which I could never ignore  so that I realized the infinity and richness of the life cycle.

Since then I have never stopped painting the dried flowers and weathered leaves….

The dried petals and leaves form unique textures, in which  the intricate veins are like the rolling mountains and the rising and falling of the surface of the Earth, full of strength,  spreading and lurking. Their colors are strong and splendid, saturated with mysterious symbolical implications. I am having a conversation with them in the same way as I observe human life. Eventually, the colorful images appear on my canvas are connotations that touch human soul in depth than their original objective images. They are no longer the dried flowers and leaves but the portraits of hearts and souls. Even though being silent, they have their own desire, emotion, fear and imagination like human beings. I am aware that the objective images in my painting are only a carrier of my feeling and thought, the subjects become unimportant. Daily experiences and pure imagination, without prearrangement or foreseeable ending, take shape gradually with the desire of expression at any will, real and candid. Sometimes, a ray of sunset or a thunder shower inspires me far beyond imagination, and drives me to start over a painting that has nearly completed from the very beginning.

I wield my brush spontaneously on my canvas where the possibilities of life keep conceiving and evolving, some of them are gradually settled, while others like labyrinths, full of variables, attracting and  indulging me  to immerse in the excitement and uncertainty and enjoy painting freely.
